After uninstalling Build 29 and installing Build 28, TIR now closes OK without freezing. I am inclined to leave things as they are, unless you want me to try Build 29 again?

In fact, Periodic News Check has been disabled since I first installed the software.

I will try a clean software install as you suggest - but that will have to wait till tomorrow now. Is it worth trying the older version from the CD instead of the downloaded 4.1.029 final?

Firewall and AV running in the background. I have tried disabling both but it makes no difference - trying to close TIR it still freezes.

All profiles are 2 Kb.

TIR4 (4.1.029) runs fine but when I try to close the program it hangs. Doesn't matter whether I use File/Exit, the 'close program' X, or the system tray icon - TrackIR hangs and I have to resort to Task Manager to close the 'not responding' program.

Any solution?
