Sorry Mike, I seem to have caused some confusion.
I have software version 5.1.3 running well with my TrackIR 4 Pro hardware.
What I wanted to do was to try running 4.1.038 software, it's that software that isn't working. Symptoms as explained in my OP.

Thanks Michael, that did allow more 'yaw' movement in game. I now have to get used to driving with that view
and I think the rFactor 'look to apex' view is still having an effect.
