If you can try a powered USB hub that may work.
You could also try getting a third party PC MCIA USB card. Not sure if it would be worth it though.
I know we have SmartNAV units working with Windows 98x.

We do not have a locking mechanism per se, I will add it to our feature request list though.
I would suggest making copies of the profiles you setup. So if a profile gets messed up you could just have the user use the copy or backed up profile.

The SmartNAV can work with Words+ EZKeys. We have worked Words+ in the past to ensure compatibility with their products.
