The sunlight will cause IR light interference, and sometimes will confuse the TrackIR software. There is a Light Threshold Filter setting that can help, it's on the Camera tab.

That isn't going to help use TrackIR as a mouse.

Unfortunately the TrackClip Pro only works on the left side, but it should be adjustable enough that it won't interfere with the mic on a headset.

There isn't really a way to attach it to a hat without getting creative, and you might have to sacrifice a few hats in the process. If you do get it post some pictures though!

It sounds like you set the profile TrackIR will use for the Mouse Emulation program. To start the program itself you need to go to Start>All Programs>TrackIR v5> Mouse Emulation.

Bummer about having to reinstall Windows, but glad to hear it's working!

In the TrackIR software right click anywhere in the HUD area and choose Camera View. Do you have any other red/green areas beside the 3 points of the TrackClip?
