what happens when framerates dip?

Post by dswo »

Have been playing around with Cam2Pan, and my appetite is now keen for the real thing. Am wondering, though, if my hardware is up to it. I am mostly a Microsoft Flight Simulator person, with excursions to IL-2 FB. In Flight Simulator, I set my framerates at 12 fps, and am happy when I can get that (which is most of the time).

I realize that numbers like this will sound pitiful to many of the people who would own TrackIR in the first place. But there it is.

With Cam2Pan, I've noticed that the panning cuts out at irregular intervals. It's especially noticeable when there's an audio message from air traffic control. When the message is over, panning commences once again, but I'm looking back over my shoulder. This is not fun.

Will the same thing happen with TrackIR? I've noticed the fps recommendations, and just don't think I can get my framerates up that high without sacrificing the visuals that lured me into this area in the first place.

I can't speak with any authority about MS flight sims, but with the one's I'm running (Il2FB/PF, Jane's WWIIFighters) there has been NO noticable frame rate hit and NO loss of tracking in game. I've found TIr3Pro to be solid as a rock. Once I had it set up the way I wanted (the unit is very customisable) I never had to think about it again.

Hi David:

I crank up my settings in FS2004 and end up with about a 9 when flying over cities and things of that nature. I see no problem with TrackIR at all, even with frame rates in the dirt.

TrackIR does not cut out during ATC. The reason you are seeing that is probably due to the cam2pan controlling the view via a mouse mode of sorts. With TrackIR, you get enhanced mode, and now 6DOF with the Vector Expansion. This means that the view control and the mouse are seperate items. So even with the ATC window open, you can still look around and see now problems with view control at all.
