Hi!

Resurrecting this old thread. How is finger tracking working now? If we were to purchase a new system, what cameras currently work with and are required to do hand/finger capture? And how good IS the capture of fingers? Does it show the proper flexing of the fingers? All fingers? Are there any videos that show this working?

We have one of the original Optitrack systems and for what we've needed it's worked flawlessly. On the CGTalk forums we've always promoted the system. But right now apparently there is very little information regarding the important issue of finger capture. it just seems that if this worked very well, it would be one of the things y'all here would be shouting from the highest mountain.

Hi Megalodon,
I am happy to email you an example video and file that has our interpolated finger solution so you can see exactly what it does.

Thank you,

Thanks for the info and links Brent! It looks like finger capture is very good for this system - and definitely good enough for our needs. ;)

Two final questions.

1. Can this all be streamed into MotionBuilder? With three, four or five characters at once?
2. Regarding full body capture... one of the two things we like about non-optical systems is that you can lay down without having to worry about marker occlusion. With these newer cameras and resolution, is it possible - for example - to fall flat on the floor without losing the actor to occlusion?

Thanks!

Hello!
I am Clement, from Kigali.
We have an optitrack system with 24 cameras. Now we want to track the fingers but when we try to record in Motive, it doesn't give the option of recording 49 markers. It records only 41 markers and when we are recording something extra, we record it as rigid body.
The question is, is it possible to record the fingers with our system? If yes, how? Because in the marker set, the 49 markers is not there.
Thanks,

Hello Clement,

The finger setups are only available if you are using higher resolution cameras, the Prime13 being the minimum requirement. If you are using Flex cameras, the option to capture fingers would not be available in Motive.

Best regards,
Steven

Hi Steven, is this something that has changed in the last version of Motive? Flex13's were able to capture fingers before.. could you confirm?

Hi Bryan,

Sorry for the confusion. You are correct. Flex13 are also able to capture the finger setup. Any system with Flex3's, however, would not.

Dear Steven,
Thank you for your reply. The attached picture is one the cameras that we are using. Please would you let me know if such kind of cameras will work the finger track? We have a 24-Cameras system.
Thanks,

Clement

Hi Clement,

The s250 is one of the older, low resolution, cameras. I don't believe you can capture fingers with this camera as it is not as high a resolution as the Flex13.

Finger capture requires the Flex13 camera or one of the Prime models.

Cheers,
Steven

Yes, it is working very well in Motive:body, which replaced Arena. The only thing, it only works with the flex-13, prime17 and prime41 cameras, which have the resolution necessary to do it.

You might, and I say might, be able to do it with the s250e's in a small capture volume with sufficient cameras (but it is not officially supported by NP)
