OptiTrack for use in Augmeted Reality

Post by Lebanon »

Hello there,

My name is Mark and I would like to recreate the following presentation ->

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckiYKnV8Fk0

Thus a couple of questions came to mind and so far I have not been able to find answers to them so I would appreciate your support.

1. What setup would I need? I see that there are optitrack cameras in the ceiling and I counted 6 but I don't know which ones and how many are recommended to achieve such a STABLE TRACKING - truly I am amazed at this! It looks like tracking in video postproduction and it's happening in real time.
2. Why are some cameras with a blue ring and some with white ring?
3. What software would I need from you and could I hook it up to Unity or UE4?
4. Is there additional tracking mechanism (apart from optical tracking) - I mean for example a tracker inside of the house with a gyroscope etc? And do you think they have somehow utilised also the gyroscope in the phone and ipad?
5. Any thoughts about the process used here?

Thank you,
Mark

Hello Mark,

Thank you for posting your questions regarding AR. I am not familiar with the particular setup that is shown in the video, but I can provide some basic information to some of your questions, below.

1. What setup would I need? I see that there are optitrack cameras in the ceiling and I counted 6 but I don't know which ones and how many are recommended to achieve such a STABLE TRACKING - truly I am amazed at this! It looks like tracking in video postproduction and it's happening in real time.
Minimum camera requirement varies depending on what you are tracking and the size of the tracking area. In general, 6 cameras should be enough for good tracking in a smaller space. For a custom solution to your tracking needs, I highly suggest you work with one of our Sales engineers to design an appropriate system.

2. Why are some cameras with a blue ring and some with white ring?
Blue typically indicates a camera is active but not recording. The colors can be customized on those status rings, however, so I cannot say how the colors might have been set.

3. What software would I need from you and could I hook it up to Unity or UE4?
You will need Motive:Tracker if you are only tracking rigid bodies. This is capable of streaming into Unity and Unreal.

4. Is there additional tracking mechanism (apart from optical tracking) - I mean for example a tracker inside of the house with a gyroscope etc? And do you think they have somehow utilised also the gyroscope in the phone and ipad?
I cannot speak for the setup in the video, as that is not our own.

5. Any thoughts about the process used here?
Same as number 4, I cannot speak for this. In general, it is only necessary to track a headset with our system and stream the position and orientation data into an engine such as Unity or Unreal. You can find more information on our plugins for those applications here.
