LCD goggles and TrackIR equal PERFECT VR.

Post by pixelsmack »

Why has no one done this? There use to be goggles that were lo-resolution about 7 years ago from Sony and Panasonic. This idea was abandoned sadly. Before it's time I guess.

But now for gaming this seems a no-brainer.

Can you imagine the immersion when you combine TrackIR with some hi-resolution LCD goggles? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

There are some goggles/ glasses which are high rez and have head tracking built in. The only thing it wont do is the Z axis that im aware cus there is no sensor ontop of the monitor... But I cant remember who made it or what its called and i've been looking :(

I'll post you if i find it, but its like 350

Woohoo, I found it.

Check that out. I would love one if I could afford it, but again, it doesnt offer 6DoF like TrackIR does.

You can use an HMD like that for the display but use TrackIR with it for full 6 DOF (and much more accurate) head tracking.

Yea exactly, combine the two.. I mean that product is an HMD but with 3 DOF built into it, so then you could use TrackIR for the other 3 DOF :)

Edit:
Also I believe that product allows for the new 3D Stero stuff as well :P

My head and face is gonna be crowded, if i ever bought one, lol

You'd probably be best served to use TrackIR for all 6 DOF, as the fidelity of optical tracking far outpaces the accelerometers in those HMDs.

Guys, there's an older technology (was CRT only until 120Hz LCD became cost-effective) that's been resurrected which may be exactly what you seek:

I have a pair of VR920 HMD, in fact its lack luster 3DOF head tracking is what brought me to this website. Maybe you could license your tech to Vuzix, Seth - which would allow you to combine efforts with Vuzix to achieve more developer's co-operation in implementing native TrackIR support in videogames.

- for the curious, the VR920 headtracking is laggy and stutters. For me at least. Your mileage may vary.
