Can TrackIR do this?

This won't affect my decision whether or not to buy, but I thought I'd ask the question anyway:

Can TrackIR emulate the following: a pilot raises his head higher to get a better view of the runway during landing/flare. Not just looking up, which does not raise the point of view, merely angles it up; but keeps the view angle straight-ahead, yet higher. I'm not describing this very well. Hopefully clear enough to get an answer!

Sorry, it won't do that - it *would* be cool though!

I've been thinking about just what you're talking about ever since I got my TrackIR2 a couple of weeks ago - right now it offers rotation about X (looking up/down) and Y (looking left/right) axes only.

But wouldn't it be cool if you could also have translation along X, Y and Z! In other words, moving your whole head right while looking straight ahead would shift the viewpoint in the VC to the right, without rotating the view. Likewise, raising your position higher while looking straight ahead would raise the viewpoint in the VC for a better view over the dashboard, again without rotating the view up or down. Or say you want a better view of the instruments - lean forward a bit and the viewpoint moves closer to the instrument panel.

Think about it - the left winshield pillar is blocking what you want to see... just lean forward and right a bit, look to the left and you can see around the pillar!

Maybe one day NaturalPoint will come up with something like that. If they do, I'll be first in line for it!

That's *exactly* what I was trying to describe. I think TrackIR is really cool as is, but adding that ability in a future version or enhancement would take it over the top.

The only thing I would change would be to still be able to look left/right or up/down at the same time as changing the x, y, or z centerpoints. The result would be like actually being there in the virtual cockpit.

Let's hope the TrackIR R&D people read this thread!

Yeah, TrackIR is *awesome*!!! Thanks, NaturalPoint for making this possible The first week I had it, my thumb kept going for the hat button to look around but now I'm trying hard to remember what that hat was for in the 1st place!

Anyway, no need to change things, my vision allows both translation and rotation in all 3 axes at the same time - i.e. you could lean right/forward and look up/left at the same time. I was just trying to emphasise that you could move side-to-side or up-down *without* rotating the view - that is my biggest problem right now, I shift around in my seat a lot (particularly on landing) and this causes the view to jump around a lot. (I just need to learn discipline I guess...)

I've thought about this a LOT lately and I know how it could be done, I just don't know if the current TrackIR hardware would be up to it.

Gents,

This idea has been around on the beta testers forum for a long while. I believe it was nicknamed 6D.

The general problem here is that the actual game would need to support this feature. The main game at the time was IL2-FB. We were talking about being able to use the TrackIR to adjust the virtual head position, so you could look around cockpit struts and such. This includes doing exactly what you are talking about.... adjusting the eye view point.

The only sim that supports something like this is FS2004, but the TrackIR cannot do this as of now. This is because in FS2004, the eye point is controlled by push button, not external commands, such as the TrackIR.

I know that the NaturalPoint team has thought of this and I also know they like the idea. But, we need to wait for developers to start implimenting something like this in the game.

My advice is to start writing developers emails requesting it. The main one I would try right now is 1C:Maddox. They are beginning to work on a few WW2 sim called Battle of Britian. I am sure they could impliment a feature such as this as it was a large requested one for IL2: FB.

Hang in there.... one day we will see it. Unfortunantly I fear it is a few years off.

QB]It seems the zoom, or eyepoint function cannot be an axis in fs2004 at this time, but the tilt can! Is there any way TrackIR2 could process the tilt axis? By using 2 dots or a line. That would at least give us another axis

Also, the eyepoint can be moved with keys, this should make it possible to emulate keystrokes with trackir2 to be able to move the eyepoint. i.e. smaller dot means one move back, larger dot one move forward. (or whatever method the trackir would use to interpret Z-axis, perhaps distance between 2 dots, with horisontal difference interpreted as tilt )

Would it be possible? -Do I make any sense?
