FSX and TrackIR 4

I have been trying to get to grips with this for a few days now.
Basic setup is FSX running UK scenery and the PMDG NGX.
The trackir is fixed to the left side of the headset with the cam on top of a wall mounted 19" monitor about head height.
Problem is when I turn my head it sometime is smooth, sometimes gittery then when I stop to do something like click a button on a panel I can't get it to hold still despite making a concious effort of holding my head still.
I would like to get this fixed as the feel of realism is good.
I take it's a profile issue.
