TrackIR 4 pro: stopped working, only very faint red led

Hiya!

A very good friend of mine gave me his trackir4pro to check on my computer... it was working fine until on day it just stopped. So he gave it to me to have a look at it , does the same on my computers too:
No windows message about a usb device connected, and only the middle top red led lights VERY faint.
I checked the usb cable and it is fine - from the usb plug to the pcb connection... the pcb looks fine without any apparent damage.
Is there anything else to check? or it just bit the dust? is it a common way for them to die?
