Tracking an object at speed over distance

I'm new to the forum and new to this industry but am looking for a little help in regards to an application. When it comes to tracking a fast moving object such as a ball across a significant distance such as a field, court, or track what are the best options? The critical factors for the application will be accuracy, time stamp, and analysis. It appears optitrack has the functionality with their cameras but can such an application be created with GPS tracking in a camera free environment? My thought would be through the use of smartphones.
Cameras would be a great way to go but the application would be better suited for a camera free environment for greater scale. I appreciate any feedback, insights, or direction.
