using centering sometimes restricts pitch axis

This is difficult to describe, but I'll do my best. When I look side to side & use my centering button, there is no problem looking either direction after centering. If I use the centering button while I'm looking up or down, the view returns to center, but my view is then restricted in the pitch axis. For instance, if I were to use the centering button while looking up, the view returns to center but I can't look up afterward. I can fix this by then looking down & hitting the centering button , this will allow me to look up again , but then my view downward will be restricted.
I am using Windows 7 & have my centering button assigned to a button on my joystick.
