[quote=CHUCKP]My current monitor is a 19" SAMSUNG Widescreen.

As I get more into gaming, and especially if I get this TrackIR 5 unit, I am thinking of upgrading to an ASUS 24" LCD monitor that I can get for only $220. Since everything will be larger on that size screen, I might be able to get away with sitting close to 24" away from it and still see the screen clearly...

Muhad, it is good to hear that your TrackIR works OK with your eyes as close as 12" to the front of the LCD. Maybe the 24" Minimum spec from the manufacturer is a bit too conservative?

Vincent, have you actually tested the IR5 closer than 2' and found that it really stops working at that point...one of your customers seems to be having good luck at half that distance?

Your 19" would be a good secondary display for a GPS.

If you get a new lcd monitor make sure you get a good one. If you have a BestBuy near by, get one there. You can always take it back.
The store display pictures are almost useless since the colors are usually very simple, you must test it out at home.

Plus you will have to use a good DVI-I cable ASSUMING that your video card has DVI output. I buy my cables from here --> http://www.cablestogo.com/

You can use the Microsoft ClearType Tuner to set up the text on the lcd monitor. --> http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cle ... Step1.aspx

Keep us up to date.

CHUCKP, I should mention that my bifoculs are very large. I think the number is 45 or 55. And I have them very high just under my lower eyelid. I do this with the glasses that I use with a computer. I use these glasses when I am programming/developing software, but I am now retired. My bifocul range is about 10" to about 24". Just right for sim'n.

I should be careful about a cheap 24" monitor as some of them are truly terrible. I have a Benq which is excellent. Anyway, there are a couple of things to keep in mind :-

1. 24" is a large area and using TIR requires moving your head so you are often looking at the screen through the edge of your lenses. I had to buy a pair of dedicated computer specs in order to see clearly. I would strongly advise you to test whether you can see things clearly this way. Have you asked about computer lenses?

2. at a 24" monitor's native resolution (1920 x 1200 in my case) things do not look bigger. In fact they look much smaller than say 1024 x 768 on a 19". In order to see things bigger on a 24" you will need to run it at a much lower res which may be truly awful on a cheap monitor. Not sure which flight sims you are using but Aces high and warbirds are fine at 1024 on a 19"

Hope this helps,

Maybe you guys at Naturalpoint could sell some sort of TrackIR vertical stand or wallclip in the future. Something that will make it easier for people to mount the unit when they need to put it farther behind their monitor. Or even a monitor clip that has a rail on the Z-axis so the unit can clipped to the monitor but moved farther back on the rail to increase the distance to the gamer.

Just wanted to report back to close out this issue:

I got myself a very well reviewed 23" ASUS Monitor to replace my Samsung 19" and with 44% more screen space, I can now sit back almost two feet from the screen and see everything clearly. Maybe things ARE "smaller", as one person posted, on a 23" screen vs a 19" one,at native resolution, but this monitor is SO clear and the type is SO sharp, that the perception is that it IS easier for me to see clearly than my old monitor was.

The TrackIR 5 system with the TrackClip Pro mounted on my headphones works just fine at that distance!

I have a few other easily fixable calibration issues that I will mention in another post.

Overall, I am VERY happy with TrackIR5. I play mostly Air Combat Sims like IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. Using this system in that game is simply AWESOME...the degree of your immersion in the game with it vs without it isn't even close.

I recommend this purchase if you are serious about getting the most out of your gameplay.

Chuck P.

PS: I hope that more Air Combat Sims will come out or be modded to work with TrackIR 5. One thing I can warn potential purchasers about is that once you use this, flying without it is completley unsatisfactory!!
