Tips for buying and selling Optitrack on E-Bay

Post by will.b »

E-Bay is another way to buy or sell Optitrack gear with some additional buyer/seller protections in exchange for a commission on sales.
Having bought and sold Optitrack gear on E-Bay, here are some tips for a positive experience as a seller or buyer:

If you are selling:
+ write a descriptive title with multiple keywords such as Optitrack Flex13 motion capture camera
+ if you are selling electronics, include pictures that show the gear working as this will help get a higher sale price
+ record camera serial numbers in case the buyer reports a problem upon receipt
+ search completed listings to get an idea of what past items sold for
+ since motion-capture equipment appeals to a small pool of buyers, it takes patience to sell at a fair price
+ begin with a fixed-price listing with a best-offer option so you can see how many people view or watch your listing. The fixed-price can be reduced or the listing can be changed to an auction format once you see you'll have enough bidders.
+ if using an auction to sell older or less in demand items such as active cameras or components, set the starting bid to your lowest acceptable sale price, the $1 starting bid isn't a good idea since you may only get one bid.
+ be realistic about sale prices for used electronics as higher-demand items like Prime cameras in working order may sell for 50% new price, but an untested or older V100 may sell for 10% of new price.

If you are buying:
+ search for descriptive keywords like "Optitrack" "motion capture" as well as specific model names since not every seller writes fully descriptive titles
+ search completed listings to see what similar items have sold for
+ use the best offer to negotiate a lower sale price
+ look for pictures or proof that cameras are in working condition or be sure the seller allows returns
+ you should be able to negotiate a lower price if the seller cannot provide proof that the cameras work
+ best deals are found in auction-style listings of lower demand items, items with misspelled or uncommonly used title keywords, or auctions that end at a time when fewer people are online

The Optitrack community of users is awesome, I've had many pleasant E-Bay message exchanges with other users happy to talk about how the equipment they're selling worked for them.

Best wishes!
