Armed Assault & TrackiR

Post by Bran »

Well well well...look what I have found!
If that doesn't sound promising!

Go on, guys...now it is your turn to finalize that "statement".

An official word is - read carefully :

I cannot promise there will be no Track IR support in ArmA.

Note: I am a programmer, and therefore this sentence means exactly what is says, not something it seems to say or even something is does not say.

TrackIR in ArmA would probably lead to me never leaving the house

I have TrackIR working in OFP by using TrackMapper's keybind functions to trigger the Numpad keys (which allow you to look around freely as a soldier or in vehicles). It's not perfect but it's functional. I'd like fullt free movement but as it is with this setup you can only look around by stepped degrees if you see what i mean.

I found this info on www.simhq.com

After hearing rumors about TrackIR support for Armed Assault, I quickly e-mailed their PR guy, Paul Statham, for confirmation. This is a small bit of the response, "I had a word with the programmers and those currently working on implementing TrackIR support, the answers were as follows: 1. It will be for both vehicles and infantry. 2. It will be more than 2 movements, but maybe not all 6."

Just some news. This time it is an exclusive interview with the producers on a czech site.

"...Some guys from OFP.Gamepark.cz sent a long list of questions to Placebo, the Bohemia Interactive Studio Public Relation Manager, concerning technical aspects of Armed Assault, the highly awaited OFP sequel. Viktor Bocan & Jiri Rydl, respectively BIS Armed Assault Project Manager and IDEA Games Public Relation manager, answered almost all questions. ..."

Although ArmA's graphics can't keep up with BF2 graphics, I think, it yet looks way better then OFP, and even uses HDR which BF2 doesn't.

Just see ArmA as a scout product for OFP2...where gameplay will be the same but with high-end, top of the line graphics. Scheduled for 2006...and it probably won't use OFP2 as a name due to codemasters holding the brand name rights.

I have read, that you have put your hands an a non-public demo.
If so, could you confirm, which sort of aiming is used?
e.g.
OFP had a 2D flat ironsight.
Battlefield 2 has a 3D ironsight.
What sort of has ArmA to offer? Still old 2D style or did they even switch to aimpod/scope-view/cross-hair only? Which would be sort of console action style instead of sim style.

I have seen scope views so far, but I hope they switch to a modern 3D ironsight view.

hi there Bran,
We did have a private build to show off at GDC, but we agreed to be very secretive about it, so i can't answer your question at this time.
We are hoping to have a video up of trackir usage in the game within the month, with their approval. But they also mentioned showing off an improved build at E3, so we're still talking about how to handle our promotion of the game. We wouldn't want to show off, or talk about, anything that isn't the latest and greatest!

I'll definitely post more as soon as i'm able.

GamesConvention in Leipzig has just started and first demo tests are already published via internet.
It seems, that not only ironsights and scopes are well done, but for the first time vehicle cockpit instruments are fully animated!

Armed Assault seems to be THE GREAT product to show the advantages of TrackIR. I knew it all the time
