When I least need it during a race (old or recent games)(and across at least three different PCs) it stops working. Have to turn it off and back on again to work. Don't even need to turn the game off to do this.

OTOH, I can't afford to drop $150+ every 6 months for a replacement either. One person with a problem doesn't mean the end of the World Harry. I just mentioned that the unit runs hot. Sounded like abeeber had a dodgy unit. Otherwise there would be postings all over the forum with people screaming about pools of plastic on top of their monitors. Don't sweat it mate. NP is good for replacing faulty goods and this is the best TIR yet.
You know you want it.
It's not like we're roasting marsh mellows over the top of them.

heat issue
Re: heat issue
Hi Harry, this is a tech support forum so the majority of posts will be from those who do have problems with their units. It really is not a good way to judge how good or bad a product is, the only way that you can do that is to see how many have been sold compaired to the amount of genuine RMA's needed.
Occasionally there are those who unfortunatly have some major problems that can be very difficult to sort for them, but the majority are set up problems or conflicts that are easilly sorted. That is why I post/interfere here a lot, to try and help those who's problem is a fairly simple one to solve for those who know how too. I received that sort of help when I first got my TIR1 and they to be honest were a pain when compaired to TIR3 or especially TIR4.
I had a problem with my TIR3, so I contacted NP and the issue was sorted but the replacement must have been knocked in transit from the US a quick call and SORTED. NP is a small company and I have had some of the best support from them ever, it is true that some ime accidents happen but I do not think that anyone at NP would misslead anyone or ignore their problem. In this matter I would say that NP is on the ball
I had the confidence to go with TIR4 and it is like having TIR again for the first time again, NOT for problems but for the WOW factor. You would notice the difference especially going from TIR2 to 4 and the 6DOF when supported is magical.
I posted this not to have a go Harry, but to try and give you a personal perspective of a user that has had problems, had them sorted and trying to return the favour. It is easy to see TIR and NP in a negative way from reading these boards, but that is the only time that people normally post here.
Good luck Harry and I hope you do not regret any decision you make.
@ Rick/NP
Guys how about a general discussion section where general talk about TIR/NP can be held so that people can see the good as well as the problems. A place where experiences in game can be shared and discussed. It seems natural to have one here so that people like Harry and those thinking of TIR can get a ballenced picture of TIR instead of just all the problems. Just an idea
Toady I gathered that I will let you know what the RGT is like and any confilcts/problems

Re: heat issue
Hi Barred, those are good points, especially about this being a tech support forum so only the negative is seen here.
But you've gotta consider there are a LOT of threads here reporting problems, and the TIR is a "niche" product - the sales numbers aren't gonna be anything like a joystick or game pad. Suggests a fairly high # of problems vs units sold...
And then I've had two TIR2's, one that died totally and one that just won't work anymore though the system recognizes it when it's plugged in. I posted a thread in the TIR2 forum yesterday describing this latest problem, it's here:
http://forums.naturalpoint.com/cgi-bin/ ... 2;t=000208
If you've got any suggestions what to do, would be appreciated If I can get this thing working again, it might inspire a little confidence to get a TIR4, I've wanted the 6DOF since I got the TIR2 over 2 years ago!
If I seemed a little upset, it's just that once you've used TIR in a flight sim you can't do without it. I'd compare not having it to trying to play an FPS without a mouse! Maybe it can be done, but it's no fun, ya know?

Re: heat issue
Harry I never had a TIR2 I went from 1 to 3 then 4.
One thing to look out for is after unplugging and then uninstalling the software is to open your regestry and see if Natural Point is mentioned in the softare and hardwre sections and remove them manually.
I would not try the 4 software but stick to the last 3.xxxx.
I can understand your frustration, so if reverting to the older drivers does not work let me know or send Rick@NP an email with your name, monica here, unit number and links to your other thread and this one. I know it is a chore, but at least it is a two pronged approach.
I wish you well and good luck.

Re: heat issue
Yes the units do get hot. If you are having a specific issue with your unit then we will address that issue. Regarding your TIR2, email me a file called setupapi.log so that I may look and see how the device is being recognized by the system.
@Barred - I agree about the forum idea. I'll see about adding it.

Re: heat issue
erm... maybe the heat coming out of your screen is right where your TIR is placed?
That wouldn't help it get cooler of course.
Just guessing since you said it melted without being active.

Re: heat issue
Browsing the Lockon RU forums and thought this might be of interest.
It seems other people have been having similar problems with other TIR's. Some related to hot screens/monitors.
LockOn.ru Forums
May be a mixture of a TIR that runs hot anyway plus the additional heat from screens/monitors piling up a few too many degrees?
And yes; I know occasionally dodgy units go out like abeeber's.

Re: heat issue
Hi Natural Point,
My new TrackIR 4 Pro gets really hot after only 15 mins of usage. Is this normal?
I had exprience the head tracking begin to lag after 1 hours worth of playing time. And the unit works normally after I allow it time to cool down.
Is my unit a doggy? Or are there any way to cool down the unit while playing such as removing the back plastic cap. pls respond, as I love this product and would recommend to all my friends.
Thanks.

Re: heat issue
Hello:
Yes, the units do get pretty hot, but they are designed for this heat dissipation. If a unit dies under warranty we will replace it, no worries about that.
I don't think that the unit should start to lag because it gets hot, that is probably a symptom of another problem, perhaps a memory issue. Typically, if the hardware is working, then it will just work and not lag.
I wish I could be of more direct help on the issue. Perhaps you could describe how you feel it is lagging, and if you simply restarting the software helps, or if it does need to wait a certain amount of time to fix the lag effect.
