cockpit view and TRACK IR4 PRO in FS9 & FSX

Post by mhekul »

Hi, a very simple question. I don't have Track IR4 Pro yet but am planning on getting it soon. My question, does it make a difference what cockpit view you use in fs9 or fsx, ie; 2D or 3D. I noticed on U Tube most of the videos seem to be using the virtual or 3D cockpit. Does it work just as well in the 2D cockpit. Thanks..... Kick the Tires and Light the Fires.....

In FS2004, the TrackIR is only used within the virtual cockpit.

One of the new features of FSX is the expansion of TrackIR into the different view modes. You still have use of the TrackIR in the "Virtual Cockpit" mode, with full 6 DOF support, but this has also been expanded to the other views as well. As always, to disable the TrackIR rotation in the different view modes, just press the F9 key (default) to pause the TrackIR software.
"2D Cockpit" mode - TrackIR has support for head movement in both the Yaw and Pitch axes.

Outside View: Tail Similar to the 2D cockpit mode, in that there is support for both the Yaw and Pitch axes.

Outside View: Spot Rotating your head in the Yaw axis direction (looking left and right) will cause the view to rotate to the side that you are looking at (i.e. if you look to left, your view will rotate so you are looking at the left side of the aircraft).

It works in the 2D cockpit to a certain extent. It is useful for looking out the side windows, but useless for trying to see over the instrument panel or forward left/right. The 2d instrument panel is sticky and pretty much stays occupying 3/4ths of your screen until you deflect your head 90 degrees away (trackIr amplified deflection), then the instrument panel snaps off to the opposite direction you are looking and you are looking 90 degrees out the side window. (or up or down) That also makes it useless for visual references to the horizon. If you are using the 2d cockpit, you are pretty much flying by instruments, you can look directly left or directly right or at the instrument panel (or the ceiling or floor, but there is not much to see there)

To sum up. In FSX, it works in 2d cockpits but is not terribly useful for visual flying.

First time user of a new TIR4 Pro working fine in FS9 VC mode. When placed in Spot mode, nothing happens at all. There is no Tail mode available for this sim model. I am in 2D cockpit mode when I select the Spot mode.

All USB power features are disabled. What else can I do to make this Spot mode work?

One of the new features of FSX is the expansion of TrackIR into the different view modes. It just isn't supported within FS2004 in any view, other than the VC.
