Vista issues...

Post by reighnie »

I just got my SmartNav a couple hours ago and in the process of setting it up and testing it. I am running Windows Vista and purchased the SmartNav with a voice recognition software. However, the voice recognition software would an install. It kept giving an error about incompatible operating system. I changed the install to run in Windows XP compatibility mode and got it to install OK. However, it wouldn't run when I tried to set it up in the SmartNav control panel. But, I found that using the built in voice recognition software on Windows Vista works quite well. I had bought a microphone just to try was SmartNav, and set up Windows voice recognition while waiting for it to arrive. I noticed that they've made a lot of improvements to it. It is actually much more accurate, and allows much greater control of the computer than the older versions. So, I turned in on an amusing it was SmartNav. It works really well. I even trained it to recognize SmartNav the very first time I said it, and it hasn't gotten it wrong since.

I'm a quadriplegic and amusing SmartNav with a dot attached to my glasses. I'm using it in relative mode with the speed senate about seven and this move this at about the same and I'm having almost no difficulty navigating and selecting even small buttons. My monitor runs in 1440x900 resolution and head movement is not an issue. I do have to move my head farther than I expected based on the instructions in the book. But, it's not that big an issue since my mobility is not limited. So far, this SmartNav is a really awesome product. I'm about to try it with Neverwinter Nights. I'm not sure if Windows voice recognition will work inside of games. But I guess I'll find out.
