I'm going to wait for more info on this before I opt to reinstall my OS, which isn't a simple undertaking.

Any help on exactly what drivers I'm chasing down or what I may be trying to do here is appreciated.

Hello:

We have a special driver that is loaded at runtime, not something that you can track down at all, it is in the background. We aren't the HID devices, our driver won't show up in the Device Manager. I am sorry to hear that installing the PS\2 keyboard didn't fix it.

All I can say is that it really really really should work! I know this doesn't help at all at this point, but I do think that a reinstall of 2K will do the job. Just install our software first so you can verify that it works. We all use Win2K around the office and I have no reason to believe that this won't be the fix. Good luck. Keep us updated.

Dexmeister,

as you're considering a re-install of your OS, but you're naturally concerned at the pain involved, can I make a suggestion?

Have you looked at drive imaging? This is a way to back up your whole current install. You can then start again from scratch with the comfort that if it all goes pear shaped, all you need to do is restore the saved image, and you've lost nothing.

You don't need a second hard disk for this (but if you've got one it's easier ;-) just a separate partition big enough to take the image.

An excellent solution for this is PowerQuest Drive Image - http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/index.cfm - I wouldn't be without it now on my home rig.

HTH - good luck with your continued investigations.

Regards, Dik

Okay, the good news is, after reinstalling Win2k on a second drive, IT WORKS!!!

Now the part that concerns me is what happens if I arrive at the same point again? My PC is my lifeblood for work, gaming is my second purpose and important too.

While trying to update drivers on my old OS, I ended up in a situation where it would not reboot at all, be it safe mode, safe networked, or regular, and multiple "Repair Win2000" processes left me screwed. So, I HAD to reinstall windows.

I'm glad it works but don't particularly like the fact that the dependencies for trackIR are not installed/configured when the software or hardware is. The fact is, a driver is required somewhere, exists somewhere, and reinstalling an OS is IMO the last resort, not a common approach to fixing things. Now I've got to go reconfigure everything else related to my work applications all over again, reinstall all service packs, networking, software etc etc. Not cool.

I am really pleased that it works, but if I have to do this frequently the number of times I will is going to be limited.

Just test TrackIR after installing each new device. If it stops working, you have found the culprit. If it continues to work, awesome.

Just keep us up to date on what is going on so we will know for the future what has problems with trackIR and we can avoid it as well.

For the record, my main suspicion is that I had upgraded Win98 to 2000 Pro, and this may have been the main culprit. I had defaulted all my devices to Microsoft default drivers and still no change, so that's my best guess at this point.
