I've seen a few other forum posts about this warning, but nothing about the tracker mounted on the monitor overheating.
The software kept opening, then immediately closing. 3 LED lights would show in the tracker, then finally it went black. I unplugged the tracker USB cable, reinstalled the software, plugged it back in and received a 'USB power surge' warning in Windows. As I was inspecting the cables, I touched the tracker and it burned my fingers. I immediately unplugged it. Took a few minutes to cool down, but it was cooking itself.
No idea what would cause this. The only time I can pinpoint when the software started acting up was right after a video card update, which was another issue I saw on the forums from a couple years back. Any other records of this thing overheating?

Hello Cinurwe,
Was your TrackIR connected directly to a USB port on the motherboard, or was it connected to a USB hub? If you are using a USB hub, please make sure it has external power.
Kind Regards,
