Lollypop, the older versions of TIR took fewer frames per second. They also had a wider angle that they could see (Field of view). This was fine because there is only so much data that can pass through the USB at one time.

The TIR3 and TIR3Pro scan (take more pictures) at a higher rate so if the TIR3's had the same field of view then there would be so much information (data) trying to go through the USB there would be a traffic jam and only some of the data would get through.

It is a trade off unfortunatly of speed for accuratcy or slower (more jerky) wider field of view. With Vector (6DOF) the higher speed is needed to work as the Scanner/camera has 3 times the information to work out before sending out to the USB so that GTR can tell how much and what direction you have moved your head and then will do it in your game.

Personally I prefer the noarrower angle for 2 main reasons.
1) Vector (6DOF)
2) The scanner can go back further (the old one had only about 14-16" range)
