So the device redetects, after moving USB ports, but doesn't respond?

No, the screen remains completely frozen. The computer and smartnav don't react to any comands.

OK, so the whole PC is locking up, and this doesn't occur, if the SmartNAV software is not running?

Only while Smartnav is running.

Does this occur, if the software is running, but the hardware is not plugged in?

No.

And when the software is running and the screen freezes the lights of the smartnav hardware turn off.

Do you have access to an external USB hub, with it's own power supply?

In the past when I had problems with my SmartNav, I have used a free program called USBDeview to remove all previous instances of plugging the device into different USB ports. This fixed the issues for me, although they do not match your description exactly.

You seem like a technically savvy user, but obviously, you should use this at your own risk.
