well, looks like the device is faulty.

to me it looks like there needs to be some sort of gain control for the sensor, or the sensor is faulty and generating it's own contacts.

you end up with the trackir software going bonkers because it can't reject the clutter and eventually crashing.

the interesting thing is that the clutter is completely random and VERY quick. If the trackir software rejected those contacts (ie by ignoring every contact that is there just for a split second) i think it would still work properly.

hmm... it gets stranger (if there;s anything a tech hates, it's an intermittent problem).

basically i borrowed a hdd from work and did a fresh os install on it.

tested it with the 2.01 drivers and same issue.

then i went into bios, fiddled about with a couple of settings (disabled usb 2.0 support for some of my ports, freed up a lot of IRQ's by disabling devices, etc etc) and turned on PnP OS installed . Now my trackir seems to be working (with the OCCASIONAL static display, but it keeps working).

time will tell if i stumbled across something useful here.

just checked with the 2.01 drivers on the tracking screen and could see a little bit of the static.

updated to the 2.11 drivers and the static is MUCH worse.

so there we go, looks like the main part of the issue is the 2.11 drivers.

oh, just in case - I came to this conclusion with a fresh install of winxp which i then imaged, installed trackir 2.01 , imaged back to trackir free and installed 2.11.

here's the bit i think is causing the problem

"ENHANCED TRACKING ENGINE
With 2.11s enhanced tracking engine, users will experience a noticeable improvement in smoothness and accuracy, resulting in more realistic movement."

How was this achieved? was the sampling rate ramped up for the unit?
