Re: Official Support for keyboard mapping

First off, thank you for spreading the word about TrackIR, as well as bringing up suggestions like this. We do really appreciate it. And we do consider each recommendation carefully.

Keymapping is still on the list of desired features for Version 5 software (which is still in its infancy). We still think it should be a feature that we offer. "On the list" means it is something we evaluate when we begin development. It's a long list, and not everything makes the final cutting floor release. I think everyone is in agreement that emulation and mapping are great ways of expand TrackIR's functionality.

Putting the various NP statements on this topic into context:

Jim's statements were made when 5.0 was still a hypothetical twinkle in NaturalPoint's eye. It reflected our general perspective on this feature, and nothing more. It certainly wasn't motivated by current development.

Birch's statement was made during 5.0's development. It reflected a recognition on our part that every feature we are considering implementing at some point would not be included in 5.0. Keymapping emerged as a feature that would need to be bumped in favor of core features.

My statements, then and now, confirm and elaborate on what Birch said. Jim would say the same thing today. We're still looking at keymapping as a neat feature that we'd like to offer. It's still "on the list." But, it couldn't be developed until the core of the TrackIR software was overhauled (because of a variety of technical limitations in 4.x code). That was just completed last week.

Looking forward, our development resources are momentarily allocated to other pressing projects. Any speculation on when new features might be added to TrackIR Software Version 5 would be just that--speculation. I'm hopeful that emulation/mapping could be included in 5.1 or 5.2. There is no timeline for the release of those versions yet.

Suffice it to say that keymapping, along with all other features we're considering, will be released when it's ready. That will have to do for now.
