18 camera calibration

Hi,

I have an 18 camera setup which is going to be used for tracking rigid bodies in a 4 x 7.8 x 2 metre volume. All of the cameras are at a height of roughly 2.7 m, but are right at the limits of the volume, rather than at a distance.

I'm having trouble calibrating the cameras at the moment, and I'm getting a pretty large wand error (StdD ~ 3.37). The majority of the cameras are fixed to the walls or a pillar, so it's a bit of a hassle to move them. I have 2 stands carrying 3 cameras each which can be moved fairly easily.

I used MATLAB to work out the camera positions beforehand, but the physical results aren't as good as I'd hoped.

Any advice?

Would it be possible to diagram the setup?

What type of cameras are you using, what lenses are on them?

What version of software are you on?

I'm using version 2.5.0 of Tracking Tools, with the 46 degree FOV V100:R2 cameras.

The cameras are meant to cover the majority of one half of a roughly 8 x 8 metre room, up to a height of at least 2 metres. The room has a pillar in the middle, this is used as the halfway mark. The current camera layout can be seen in the attached link.

I'd probably approach this by taking two cameras off of each side and putting them on the shorter walls, then adjusting the positioning so that they are a bit more equidistant. Lowering a few of them may work as well, so that you are seeing the volume from a high and a low perspective. Start by aiming towards the center of the volume, calibrate, then test. Adjust cameras as necessary to tweak coverage a bit, recalibrate, retest.
