Whilst still using TrackIR 4 is it possible, and sensible, to switch to TrackIR 5 without making any further purchase? Following a crash can I go ahead and re-install TR/IR 5?

I would whole-heartedly recommend using the 5.x software with your TrackIR 4 hardware. If offers a superior experience in terms of the tracking capabilities, scaling, and profile management.
