IR LEDs on TrackIR5 won't turn on?

Recently, my TrackIR5 has gotten a lot more use thanks to Elite: Dangerous.
However, over the past few weeks, my TrackIR has become finicky and unreliable. Then, a few days ago, it stopped working entirely.
So I'm pretty sure that the issue is that the IR LEDs aren't turning on. I can normally see them glowing slightly red behind the front panel of the device when they're on. Furthermore, if I set the software to show me the "camera view" I am able to see that it is able to pick up other IR sources (lightbulbs, TV remotes, the sun) just fine. But I'm not getting any IR reflection back from my TrackClip.
I've tried setting the mode back and forth from track clip to track clip pro (pro mode disables the LEDs, right?), reinstalled the software, etc, so I'm thinking it's a hardware problem.
But I tried popping the unit out of its housing, and I used a multimeter to verify there's connectivity between the LED connections, so I don't think it's an issue with the LEDs themselves, although I'm not about to manually run enough current through the thing to light the LEDs and verify that for sure.
...It's just annoying that in a piece of kit with a camera, onboard image processwing, etc, the bit that breaks first amounts to a little blinky light.
I have other options, I suppose: I could set up my own IRLEDs and mount them next to the TrackIR camera. I could use a TrackClip Pro (I actually have one, but I greatly prefer the regular clip as there are no wires and trackclip pro won't fit on my headphones without modification.) But before I go down those roads, does anyone have experience with a similar problem?
