Is my camera dead?

I have been using my TrackIR5 with a hat clip for years with FSX. Everything has been working fine, including this afternoon. I took a break for a while and then tried to start the camera for another flight. Suddenly, only four dim red lights in the center of the camera light. The green ready light does not come on and therefore no tracking of my head movements happens. I exited the program and tried restarting the computer - still no green light. I also tried unplugging/replugging in the USB connector - same result (no tracking).

Is there anything else to try? I am afraid that my camera is dead.

Bill

billhuntsman,

Let's troubleshoot this a little bit. When you plug it into the USB port, does it show properly in the device manager? Does the TrackIR software show the device as being detected? If you open the camera view what do you see?

Yes, my device shows up as TrackIR5 and for what it's worth, Windows thinks the device is functioning normally.

The camera view shows the coordinate grid as normal with the circles centered at zero (centered). It does not respond to head movements (not surprising as the LED is not lit). At the lower right the first Status icon is green saying that the camera is detected and connected. The next icon for tracking status is dark.

The thing that makes me wonder if the hardware is shot is that the camera was working fine and then was not a few hours later. I do not think anything changed about my computer - no software installed. It was just put in sleep mode (as I often do) for a while.

billhuntsman,

The camera could be dead. It is a possibility. Have you attempted a removal of the software and drivers, then re-downloading and re-installing? Are we lucky enough to have a second PC to test the device on? I'd like to find out if it is the device, the pc or the software that may be causing the issue.

Thanks for getting back to me, Mike. I do have a laptop that I used to test it, following your suggestion. Had no issues installing the software, drivers, etc. Did that before connecting the camera. After connecting the camera and running the software, the symptoms are exactly the same as on my other computer. The tracking screen comes up and the green dot shows that the camera is on and detected. However, the tracking dot is dark and there is no reaction to my head movement. The LED's on the sides of the camera do not light, but four dim red lights are showing in the camera screen. I guess I'm going to need to order another camera.

Bill

Mike,
Thanks for troubleshooting this with me. I did end up ordering another camera. It came today and works fine without re-installing the software. I guess it was really a dead camera, but I appreciate your helping me look for other causes first
