Talent with dwarfism

Hello everybody!

My name is Felix, just a super short intro: I'm new to this forum and fairly new to motion capture in general. The company I work for has decided to invest in a mocap stage and I'm in charge of setting it up and getting and cleaning the animation data.

Now, for one of the projects, the CGI character is rather small and has, compared to the average adult, short legs and arms and a relatively large body and head. So in order to make movement more believeable and the retargeting process less of a pain I thought about having a person of short statue (somewhere around 1.35 m / 53 in) play the role.

I have two questions:
- Is Motive able to use any actor size/ proportion to reconstruct the skeleton or will a little person lead to lots of additional work before an animated skeleton can be exported?
- Does anybody have any experience working with data captured from people with dwarfism when it comes to retargeting? I'm specifically interested if Maya's/ Motionbuilder's HumanIK causes any issues there.

Thanks a bunch, I'm hoping someone can answer my questions.

Cheers,
Felix

Hi Felix,

Welcome to the forums and your interest in OptiTrack!

We have tracked children in the past that are of similar height. The solver doesn't make assumptions of what someone's proportions are so there shouldn't be any concern there.

I have retargeted children and shorter female talent to a wide range of different characters using Autodesk's HIK system. We had someone's nephew come in once and retargeted them to a cartoon T-rex. Lots of fun :)

Let us know if you have any additional questions. We're happy to help!

Hey Shagan!

Thanks for the welcome and the information. This sounds great; good to hear the solver isn't focussed on a certain body type!

Best,
Felix
