Taking 3D Notes - 6DOF pen

Hi All,
I would like to know if there is a known solution to actually track a 6DOF pen with optitrack.
The context would be to use that to take notes on some physical models lying on a table.
Exemple: Imagine you have a white cylinder on a table and I see a black spot on it and want to use a 6DOF pen to draw a circle around that spot and later attach a note (using the keyboard) to it.
I am wondering if there is a tool / plugin enables to do so or if not what would you recommend to start looking into?
Ultimately it is as if I want to use the optitrack digitizing probe to highlight parts of a 3D objects and then eventually use a keyboard to attache the note.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated - the intention for me is to not have to re-invent the wheel.
Thanks!
