Active dots.

I have built myself a active dot which works well a using 5v ir led. It currently runs from three watch batteries which supply 4.5v. I have a 6v battery which i would like to use as it is neater and more practical.
My question is this how do I acheive the 1v drop down (I presume with a resistor ) and what do I ask for exactly at the electronics shop.
