Only works when connected before boot and BSOD!!!

My TIR-3 Pro only works when I connect the USB plug BEFORE booting

If I plug it in after booting, all I get is a constant repetition of the USB connect/disconnect sounds. BTW this is XP-Pro with 4.0.0.20. I tried it with whatever drivers came on the CD and have the same issue. Other than that it seems to work fine, although I haven't had a chance to get into games yet since it's so late and it took som time to troubleshoot
The tracking within the software seems to work great. Thanks in advance.

Update....
The problem above still exists, but it works great in games. I've got another related problem though...
Every other boot attempt results in a blue screen stop error 0x0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF7BBD800, 0XF89D9AB8, 0XF89D97B8). If i push the reset button after I get the error, Windows will boot completely. I've noticed though that on the first boot attempt (that gets a stop error) legacy USB is supported. On the second boot attempt (after the stop error) I no longer have legacy USB support. I know this because I have a USB keyboard and a bootloader (dualbooting Linux).

I know this is TIR related because it's the only change made the system in the last 2 months and the problem began immediately after I got the thing working (sorta)
