TIR 3 and USB external HD

I just spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn't get a new external USB 2 hard drive to show up in Windows XP PRO SP2. When I remove the USB plug from the Track IR, presto, the USB drive is there.

Is there anything I can try to get these two to play well together?

I installed latest VIA USB 2 drivers, have tried the external drive on several USB ports, I have 6 in the computer and a hub. Without TrackIR, it works wherever I plug it in, with TrackIR plugged in anywhere, it does NOT work!!

Seems a mystery to me seeing as everything USB has always worked.

I have nothing strange installed, I don't think. Printer, Logitech steering wheel, one USB serial port. All work. I don't even use USB mouse or keyboard!! PS2 for both!! Old fashioned, I guess.

Anybody have any suggestions? OH, I have the latest TrackIR software installed.

Well, after some more testing, if I have the hard drive and everything else working, and plug in TrackIR, the drive goes away, the TIR doesn't work, and I have to reboot to get the drive to be recognized again!!

And here's the REAL mystery. If I have TrackIR plugged in, my hard drive is NOT recognized on the Firewire port either. With TrackIR unplugged, the drive is seen whether I plug it into Firewire OR USB 2. Go figure.

I think this thing is headed to eBay, it's been nothing but a headache and I don't find it useful enough to put up with it's quirkiness.

This sounds like a system problem. Have you tried using any other USB devices whilst your USB drive is connected? Have you ever been able to use 2 USB devices successfully, including your hard drive, on your system? It's not clear from your post as to how many USB devices you are using. Also, it's a little hard to suggest what to try without some idea of your system specifications. I'm sticking my neck out here, but I doubt very much that TrackIR is the problem.

thosj ,

Its very strange that your external hard should have a problem when TrackIR is connected.
I use an external drive at home and we use them around the office also, and never encountered a problem.

You mentioned a hub. Just for testing can you remove the hub from your system and everything else so that only your TrackIR and hard drive are left.

Connect the TrackIR and ensure everything is working, now without removing your TrackIR try your hard drive in different ports, and let me know the outcome.

What is the name of your external drive?
