Our General Tips note, "Maximize the life of your TrackIR System by unplugging the camera when it is not in use. This ensures that the infrared lights stay in good condition and will help the hardware from heating issues."
That said, unplugging and reconnecting the unit frequently can risk damage to the USB cable or your computer's USB port. Shutting down the just the TrackIR software is an acceptable practice if you are using the TrackIR frequently; however, I would recommend disconnecting the unit from the USB port if you won't be using it for a while.
