Hi there. Just bought the TrackIR 3 Pro today, and having major problems getting the thing to work (obviously, otherwise i'd not be posting !)

Quick summary..
Win XP Pro. SP2. Logged in with Admin Rights.
Other USB devices include a CH Flight Sim Yoke and CH Pro Pedals.
Software (4.0.21) installed as per instructions (drivers, reboot, plug in device, reboot). Device plugged into a USB2 port on the main motherboard.

With the device plugged in upon PC boot up, the software is loaded up, I get the 4 red leds on the front, no green status LED, and the 'Status: No Data' message.

If I now close the software down and try to load it again, it does nothing. The application loads into memory, sits there using 7M, but doesn't display. Unplugging and replugging the device now causes the sotware to display and the green LED now lights !

Close down the software and try to reboot. 50% of the time windows will hang in these circumstances (its normally a clean shutdown). Only option is power cycle.

Reboot without the camera plugged in.
Upon load, plug camera in, fire up software.
Green LED comes on for 2 seconds, status displays 'tracking', but then switches back to the normal green LED off and 'Status: No Data'
With the software still running, unplugging and replugging the device caused the green LED to stay on, but still I get the 'Status: No Data'
The above case is the same if the trackIR device is plugged in when the machine boots.

In all cases where the green LED is off, using the F9 toggle function switches from off to red, and vice versa.

Nothing is displayed when I goto the tracking options. I've seen other people's with a black background and the small reflective image. On mine, its just a 'blank default grey window' with the settings button at the bottom.

Two snippets of useful information...
Looking at the installlog.txr file in the main software directory, I have a mention of 'RegisterDriverINF Update4PNp Failed' in relation to the drivers/NPUSB3.inf file.

In the setupapi.log file in the windows directory, there are mentions relating to 'Device install failed. Error 1168: Element not found' messages.

Device serial number is 26666.

I'm not sure if the above three bits of information are relevant, but hopefully they can help.

Looking through the forums, I cannot find anything relating to my problems, so thought i'd post.

Hopefully someone can shed some light upon it !

(EDIT - Same problems occur when using software version 3.13. I guess its either a system or hardware issue now..)

Marty, give this a try it might help.
Unplug the TIR
Uninstall the drives/software using add/remove software.
Go into C:\Program Files\NaturalPoint if you have used the default set up.
Download the latest driver (if you do not have it 4.021)
Reboot.
Install 4.021 (without TIR conected)
Plug the TIR into another socket (not one that is used by your CH products on the back of your PC (do not have them running on the same Hub (powered or not).

That will hopefully get you up and running. Your yoke and TIR both send a lot of data through the USB, to the point that the combined data is more than the port can handle.

Nope, still no joy. Thanks anyway.

Removed all USB devices to do the test with. Same thing as before - software loads, with the green LED on and status goes into 'Tracking for a couple of seconds before resorting to my old friend of 'Status: No Data' and the green LED off.
F9 just toggles between the LED being red or off.

Also tried the using all the USB ports, but still no joy.

I guess its a case of sending it back to where I got it from, incase something isn't entirely functioning correctly.

Marty drop Wayne a email with the TIR's number and a rundown of what is happening and point him to this thread for reference.

Sorry it did not help. TIR is worth persivering with and the guys at NP are helpful.

The "RegisterDriverINF" failure is actually a script used in InstallShield. So that driver was not registered with the Windows OS properly.

If you are familiar with XP and working with regedit (be very careful with this tool, as you can really mess up your computer) look in the following location to see if it was registered:

I also am having a similair problem to this. I recently upgraded from TrackIR 1 to TrackIR Pro with Vector expansion. With my TrackIR 1 I also had this problem every time I re booted the computer the unit would not track properly. To fix it I would shut down the software & unplug the unit briefly. This would always fix it until the next time I re booted or shut down.
When I installed the new unit just prior to Xmas it worked fine for the first few days without any problems. However on about the third day I got the green light "no show" & no tracking message. Again if I shut down the software & briefly disconnect the unit it works fine. I tried a reinstall & return to restore point prior to the initial installation & neither has fixed the problem. I also recently had to reinstall WinXP due to a crash & that too hasn't made a differene. As it works perfectly once I reconnect I havn't bothered reporting it however seeing this could be a problem for some others I thought I would let you know it's not just a one off although my situation doesn't seem as bad as Martins. I have tried plugging into different USB ports with no difference.

Lets have a look at what may be wrong....

Does TrackIR1 still work with the previous software?
Is this only happening with version 4 software, or are the results the same with version 3?

1) Un-install all your software after disconnecting your unit from your USB port.
2) Prior to any re-install, delete the NaturalPoint folder in program files and all its contents, and reboot.
3) Install the latest TrackIR software.
4) Disconnect any other USB divices that you have connected such as joysticks.
5) Connect the unit directly to the motherboard and not through a hub.

Please let me know what happens at this point. If the unit is faulty then we can have it exchanged for you.

Open up a command prompt (assuming you are running XP)

Type in: driverquery

This will list all of the drivers that are installed in your system. If you don't see NPUSB, then the driver never installed. (Confirming the error reported in the install.)

Martin - your driver information looks correct, according to the registry setting...

I was playing around with the TIR last night, plugging it in to different ports to see what was going on... when you plug the TIR into a different USB port, is it asking you to install a driver for the unit? If so, when you click "automatically find driver" is it finding the driver in the windows\system32\?

When you uninstall all of the programs (per Wayne's instructions above) before reinstalling... make sure that you remove the USB information in your registry for those devices... this will force Windows to reload the driver and not use "the old one."

USB registry info is located: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

You will have a number of devices installed... simply expand them and remove all that say they have a Mfg of "NaturalPoint"

Hi Wayne,

Unfortunately, all of the above was tried yesterday (4 hours worth) when I was trying to get it to work.
I even went one step further and removed all reference to anything naturalpoint related from the registry (mainly the HKLM\Software tree).

My TIR came from the UK Distributor, so I guess I should send it back to there, with reference to this forum thread.
