Ethernet Camera IP Address Allocation Control

Post by bitmeal »

Hi, I hope someone from the support team may comment on this.
We observed the following behavior, and cannot find any related official information or documentation.

Short version: Cameras get an IP address assigned (or assign it to themselves?). We cannot find any documentation on this process.

Observations:
When powering the cameras, connected to a network, they do not seem to have an IP address. When starting motive, the cameras seem to be discovered by an L2 protocol. Afterwards they get an IP address assigned, or allocate it to themselves. The Address seems to be allocated from the IP subnet of the interface Motive received the first discovery messages on. When connecting multiple Interfaces with different IP addresses and subnets to the network the cameras are on, the address assignment is non deterministic and results in addresses from different subnets being assigned to different cameras. The assigned addresses seem to be the first addresses in the subnet of the interface, not responding to ping requests at time of discovery and assginment.

Questions:
  • How does the address assignment/allocation work?
  • Can the assignment be configured? (e.g. interface, subnet, address pool)
