New Games and Movement

Post by Falcon761 »

Hi, I am VERY interested in buy a TrackIR headtracking device, but have a few questions:
1. When a new game comes out, can you download the files necessary to use it with these games? Is this what the TIR drivers are for?
2. If I do not have VE or am playing a non-VE game, will moving my head an inch or so to the right, left, up, down, forward, back, etc. have a severe effect on the tracking? IE if I change positions in my seat or sit a bit closer or farther from the screen because I either cant see or my eyes hurt (lol), will I have problems with the tracking?
3. I am planning on buying this as well as Pacific Fighters and maybe IL-2 (all part of the IL-2 Series), but when I look at the forums for those games (on this board), many people complain of many problems that it seems TrackIR is not addressing. Does anyone use TrackIR with the IL-2 series without problems? (i'll repost this question in the IL-2 and Pacific Fighters Forums)
4. For the users: how many people have the 120 FPS version over the 80FPS version? Is it worth it? I have a VERY hi-spec comp. (NVIDIA 6800, AMD ATHALON 2 GHz, 1GB RAM) (plan to play: FS2004 and PF)
5. Does TrackIR have a large effect on Frame rate?
Thanks!

Hi Falcon, I am an end user so I cannot fully answer question 3

Lets take your questions in order.

1/ With the new software it is possible to add the required files for the new game for TIR to work. Please bare in mind though if a game does not support TIR the it wil not work and that is down to the games developers.

2/ Without the Vector some people mover their head left and right instead of turning their head so that they can see the screen at all time (not that it is a problem when you do turn your head as it is not a 1:1 ratio) If because you have moved andyou find that your ingame view is not looking where you want all you have to do is just look straight ahead and hit the recentre key (or you can assign it to any DXinput device like your stick.HOTAS).

3/ I have been using TIR since Version 1 and IL2 since it was first published. There were a few teething problems with TIR1 with tracking but the bigest was camera range, TIR is a totally different story to range and accuratcy. To be fair some of the problems that people have is down to incorect set up which is important to get the most from TIR. If you are just using TIR (no VE) remember that TIR can only read 2 axis up/down and left/right and it makes no difference to move or turn. With VE it does make a difference even if the game does not support VE. The game only uses the axis that it is programed to use, where as TIR (camera and TIR software) does make use of the data and gives 2axis games cleaner data so movement is more precise. Please also bare in mind that most posts are about problems but those that are posting is a small proportion of users. Before I forget I do not have troubles with TIR and IL2+AEP+PF.

4/ I have the 120fps (Pro) version of TIR3 and the extra speed of the camera does make the tracking smoother and more precise over the 80ps version. Especially when using the VE the extra fps does make a difference with smoothness and accuratcy. For imersion then yes TIR is well worth it even if it is 2dof. To me TIR is the best thing to enter the sim (and other types of game) since the mouse. I am running a PIV 3.2 with 4 gig of ram and a 6800U OC and TIR should take no more than 2% of system resorces.

5/ No I have tried with and without TIR in IL2, GTR and GTL and the difference is 1 or 2 fps on my system.
