Digitigrade Creature Rigging

Hi there, I'm trying to figure out how to rig creature characters with digitigrade legs, like dogs, birds or dinosaurs, when the mocap actor is using stilts or other prosthetic enhancements. I was told that what needs to happen is 1.) Calibrate the human skeleton as normal; 2.) Remove the markers from the legs and feet and place them on the stilts respectively; 3.)Redefine the bones in their new positions.

I tried this but it was barely successful and I found that I had to keep scaling and rotating the bones manually, and they kept snapping back out of place.

Does anyone have any suggestions, workflows, documentation etc. on how to mocap creature characters, when actors are using things like arm and leg extensions? Or even a tail? I am looking at Creature Bionics for reference. Thanks!

Hi there! 😊

I've been working with the OptiTrack system and, according to the documentation (https://docs.optitrack.com/motive/trained-markersets), it looks like I should be using Markersets. However, in practice, I’m finding this feature a bit inconvenient.

In the past, I’ve used other motion capture systems to track animals like cats and dogs. It was pretty straightforward to create custom skeletons and track them accurately.

I'm wondering—have you had any success using Motive for this kind of work, especially when it comes to creating custom skeletons? If so, I’d really appreciate any tips or experiences you could share!

Wishing you all the best with your project! 🚀
