How does TrackIR work?

I’m sure this will be a “duh” moment for me, but how does TrackIR work? Not in terms of technology, but what happens on the screen when you turn your head? I’m flying F-16 and repeatedly learning the lesson of “lose sight, lose fight”. If I get a TrackIR, when I turn around to see if the bandit is on my six won’t I be looking away from the screen and only seeing the back of my room?

Hi Gerwtert,

The TrackIR has a feature that allows you to adjust how much the view changes as you move your head. For example, if you set the Speed multiplier to 3, then as you turn your head 10 degrees to the right, the view in the game will move to the right 30 degrees. This multiplier can be set to any number between 0 and 5, and it applies equally to all of the 6 degrees of freedom.

We also allow for more specific adjustments. These can be to one or more of the degrees of freedom (x, y, z, yaw, pitch and roll), and they can be set to different speeds depending on how much you have turned your head. Some people find it useful to create a dead zone in the middle, where the view doesn't move if you turn your head very small amounts (i.e. 5 degrees), but it moves more rapidly as your turn larger amounts (i.e. 15 degrees). This is done by adjusting the curve at the bottom of the Advanced Settings section in the Profiles tab.

This video on YouTube does a great job of explaining how the motion control slider works, as well as how to adjust the curves and different profiles: https://youtu.be/qdefLYQ9uYA?si=sxChRn72E1HyOxbU&t=373.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Kind Regards,

You just turn your head slightly, and the software will amplify that movement in the game. This means you don’t have to turn your body completely away from the screen to look behind the plane – just a slight turn of your head to the right or left is enough to change the view in the cockpit. Your eyes are still on the screen, but it feels like you’re actually ‘looking around’ in the game.
