TrackIR3 w/VE: Alpha3 View Jumping
TrackIR3 w/VE: Alpha3 View Jumping
Good morning --
I've had my TrackIR3 with Vector Expansion for a little over a year now. I love it. Unfortunately, I installed the Alpha3 drivers to fly Flight Simulator X with my hat, and now my device is experiencing major issues.
Symptom: View will jump wildly and erratically. Makes the device unuseable in my simulations.
Programs tested: Aces High2, FS9, FSX.
Frequency: 70-80% of the time. The other 20-30% is nearly worthwhile, with the exception that the view will abruptly shift to looking down at the floor. Though this is a mere annoyance in FS9/FSX, in AH2 it makes for a real aggravating experience.
System Specs:
Athlon 64 3500
ASUS A8N-SLI
1 GB RAM
ATI X1800 512 MB Card
XP Home
Startup and services are tweaked to free maximum memory. No virus scan program is running during FS operation.
I'm unable to determine why the device will occasionally work fine. I've adjusted smoothing, but it has no effect.
I'll be falling back to the previous drivers when I get home from work this evening. Hopefully this will address the issue, as I've become far too attached to my TrackIR to fly without it now. Sadly, this also means I won't be logging any FSX time, as there really isn't much of a point without the hat.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony Bruno

Could you attach a screen shot of your device manager, and tracking screen?
To make Print Screen work, you must save an image of what's displayed on-screen to the clipboard and then paste it into a document where it can be printed.
Windows Help: Print Screen
To do this, follow this procedure:
1. Maximize the window you'd like to capture.
2. To copy/capture the current window, hold down ALT + Print Scrn at the same time. To capture the entire screen, just press Print Scrn alone.
3. Open a new document in MS Paint, MS Word, MS Photo Editor, or Adobe PhotoShop.
4. Paste the screen shot by holding down CTRL and V at the same time.
5. Save the document as a .JPG or .JPEG file and send it in.

Pictures sent as requested.
Having read threads describing similar issues, I moved my TrackIR to a different port. No joy.
I finally uninstalled the Alpha drivers, and re-installed .28. Aces High now works again, as does FS9. Unfortunately, FS X is not supported by .28, so that leaves me frustrated.

One thing to try with the alpha version of the software try adjusting the priority setting for the TrackIR software. You can do that in the task manager. Under the processes tab, right click on the TrackIR.exe file, and select set priority. Adjust the setting to "abovenormal", and see if this resolves the image issue.
Re: TrackIR3 w/VE: Alpha3 View Jumping
I am having similar problems.. After a clean install Trackir3 with Alpha3 works fine for awhile in MSFS X but shortly after the response to head movement begins to lag behind. This get progressively worse as time goes by. In other games the response becomes erratic. The view image gets jumpy and will move of its own accord. This has lead me to uninstall Alpha3 and reinstall previous drivers.

Have you tried adjusting the priority setting?

Sorry I haven't responded in a bit; got busy with RL.
I tried this attempt; no joy. I had to fall back to the previous (non-FSX) drivers again.
Looking forward to a fix...

Okay, further updates:
1. Re-installed the Alpha Drivers early this morning.
2. Raised the priority of the TrackIR process.
3. Flew Flight Simulator X for about two hours with no problems.
4. After that time the view started sliding around randomly again, and the original issue was observed.
5. Stopping and starting both FS X and the Track IR application did not address issue.
6. Viewing the "heads" in the Track IR application without a sim running showed the same behavior. Head position would slide wildly out of alignment.
7. To verify that this was not a hardware issue, uninstalled alpha drivers and re-installed the .28 set. Head movement was normal again in both heads view and FS9.
Hope this helps.

Re: TrackIR3 w/VE: Alpha3 View Jumping
I am having the exact same problem using the exact same hardware (TIR3 w/ VE), exact same driver (alpha 3) and exact same game (FSX). Although from what I've seen it isn't really game dependent.
The problem seems to be entirely with the pitch axis--basically, if you pitch your head a certain distance up or down it starts to report erroneous movement along the yaw and roll axes. It is difficult to show the extent of the problem using still screenshots, but I've tried anyway. The first screenshot shows what happens when I look down, and the second shows what happens when I look up. In the case of looking up, the problem occurs the moment the top reflector is substituted with the central reflector on the hat.

[image]http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/8519/tr2ak5.jpg[/image]
So in conclusion, the problem seems unique to the alpha 3 drivers and for TrackIR 3 users only (assumingly, since I haven't seen any TrackIR 4 people mentioning this). And I already mentioned that this problem isn't exclusive to FSX.
I can only assume that something in the tracking algorithm broke since the last stable driver, so I'm hoping that the TIR team can locate it because I'm eager to use my device in FSX.

Hi Derek 2 things that stand out from your screen shots.
In your top one you have some interference (the small red spots) turning on light filtering should help whith that amount of red.
In your second screen shot your bottom 2 reflectors have become higher that your top one. This will confuse the software. The best thing to do is more the peak holding the clip up further, or moving the camera higher.
You need to have all three reflectors showing and not corssing over at all times. It is trial and error but have mine about 90cm away and 5 cm above my eye level.
I hope this sorts your problem out for you.
Good Luck
