TrackIR4PRO stopped functioning

Post by bpredic »

I have recently bought TrackIR4 PRO as a new item from eBay. It functioned perfectly for about a month then began to behave erratically. All of a sudden the green light would go out and it would stop tracking. Unplugging and plugging it in again would solve the problem for a minute or two and that it would happen again. Sometimes even the four IR LEDs would disappear. Finally, when the four IR LEDs disappeared no unplugging and plugging it in again helped. These LEDs never would light up again. TrackIR software doesn't recognize the device. I can turn the device off (the red LED on the top shines brightly) and turn it on again but four IR LEDs don't light up. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it didn't help. Windows properly recognizes the device when plugged in (the small yellow taskbar cloud prints TrackIR4). I have even tried installing the device on a completely new computer that never had TrackIR connected to it. It behaves the same way. When plugged in the blue LED periodically faintly lights up every 10 seconds or so stays up for a second and goes off. During that second it is shining with varying intensity, as if it is not powered properly.

Does this mean that my device has hardware malfunction? It hasn't passed more than a month since I bought it!

What is the Serial # of the device?
It should be located on the end of the cable, near the USB plug, or on the underside of the device.

At the end of the cable there is a piece of paper glued to the cable with a bar code and a number 050577. Is that it?

Searching this forum I have found that a number of people have had the exact problems as I have. TrackIR4 PRO just stops functioning after some time. Only top red LED is faintly on and bottom blue LED blinks periodically. The four IR LEDs are off and TrackIR4 software cannot find the hardware.
So far there have been no solutions. I have tried all suggestions. Registry fix, uninstalling, reinstalling, unplugging and plugging it in another USB port (self powered HUB, motherboard USB...). I have even tried to install it on my laptop that never had any TrackIR product installed. Still no success. It seems that this is hardware problem. Since returning the item to the seller is economically not an option I have ordered new device directly from NaturalPoint store.
My concerns are: Is it possible that operating conditions may have damaged the device? I don't want to repeat any possible mistakes? My primary concern is weather prolonged period of powering up the device may have damaged it. It used to stay on for 3-4 days non stop. Most of the time it was just plugged in and not tracking anything (4 IR LEDs were off). Maybe overheating problem. It was placed on top of TFT monitor.

Any comments on proper operating procedures and conditions?

Regards

Length of time plugged in shouldn't have any effect on the unit itself. It sounds like you just had a hardware failure, which sometimes happens. Be assured though that we guarantee the products for 1 year, and have no issues replacing them if there is a hardware failure.
