TIR 1 can't find the dot anymore

I've got a few years old TIR 1 unit and it's been working perfectly until now. I fired up Sturmovik, but the view control didn't work. I tried pressing the on/off and mode select keys, but they had no effect.
I exited the sim and sure enough the software was running and it responded to the mode change button correctly. When I checked out the tracking -tab I noticed that the dot didn't appear there at all. The unit was positioned properly and while I tried to adjust it I only managed to get some garbled junk to show up on the tracking screen.
This looks really bad, I don't think it's the software. Hmm wait a minute I just showed the reflective dot-sheet with all but one dot attached and it looked perfect on the tracking -screen! But why can't the unit see the single dot? My filters are all off and size filters at their respective minimum/maximum and I haven't changed anything since it las worked. My dot is attached to a pen stuck to my headphones.
...WHICH I'M NOT WEARING AT THE MOMENT!
Oh **** how can anyone or anything be this stupid. I guess this post is kind of pointless, but I'm so relieved that I'll allow it to stand here as monument to my stupidity.
It's interesting to note that I noticed the missing TIR before the missing sound.
