TrackIR 4 and XSI for animation?

Hi, I'm new here and recently bought a TrackIR 4 Pro to try and enhance my animation workflow within Softimage XSI.
I managed to use it "in a way", but am unable to integrate it properly into XSI as there are no drivers. I've also never written a driver in my life.
The only way I've been able to use it so far for realtime animation input is by swapping the unit to 'mouse control' and to drive a 3D object's rotation in two axes using Input Channels, but that means I'm not using the full capabilities. This device really has a lot of applications for animation at a very affordable price.
Does anyone have any tips so I can get to use all of the axes within my 3D app? I am willing to give writing a driver a go using the SDK, but have no idea where to start.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
Cheers,
Jim.
