Minimum distance

Is there a minimum distance below which TrackIR will not work well? I am thinking about wearing my cap backwards and rigging something to position the sensor behind my chair's headrest.
Usually anything closer than 18" is going to have issues....
A good guide is to use the Tracking screen and see how much movement you are able to get, while stilll getting full rotation of the heads screen.
