TrackIR + FSX + TripleHead2Go

I am running this combination and having difficulty tuning TrackIR to respond effectively.
The TrackIR device is in the centre of my centre monitor (3 x 19" @ 1280 x 1024).
I'm using the track clip set orientated along the vertical axis with the longest part at the bottom, the clip is attached to the left side of a headset.
I'm using the default Flight Profile with FSX
I'm conversant with resetting the head position with F12.
I find the odd occasions that I get lateral movement working something like correctly are if I move my head closer to the monitors (default position is about 2 1/2 feet away).
Vertical movements are all over the place.
If I use the 'heads' utility with mirror setting and turn my head to the left then 'my head' snaps to the right and my game head snaps over backwards.
If I move my head to the right then 'my head' leans to the right and my game head turns right quite nicely but moves toward the screen.
I guess I'm missing something obvious here but I'm not sure what, if I use the gauges view I'm not sure what is going on although I suspect the key to tuning this lays in the settings that are adjustable here.
Anyone else using a similar setup had and resolved these problems or can suggest the best route to making what could be a quite exceptional peripheral work well for me?
TIA
Ian
