smartnav installation problems

I've bought a new smartnav from inclusive technologies in the UK, and I'm having some problems installing it - hopefully someone can help. I had the same problems on my laptop, both running Windows XP.
After installing the software, the unit is detected as "USB device", when I plug it in. I searched the hard disk for inf files and found none related to the product, which leads me to believe that the software is not installing any drivers to detect.
I found the following three files in the Naturalpoint software package that I subsequently downloaded from the website:
ezmon.sys
ezusb.sys
NPUSB.inf
Which seem to be the necessary drivers, so I put these in a directory, unplugged and replugged the smartnav, pointed the wizard at that directory, and it installed. It only prompted me once to install it, and the manual indicates that it should prompt for two sets of device drivers, but it does now recognise the device as a smartnav.
However, when I run the smartnav software, no lights appear on the unit and the mouse does not move. There doesn't seem to be a status indicator on the software but it doesn't complain about it not being connected. While the app is running it uses very little CPU, but when I then close it, it prompts me to exit, I click ok, and then its processor usage goes sky high. There are not even enough resources to terminate the process on my laptop, though I can just about manage it on my desktop.
So, three problems:
1. Software doesn't appear to install drivers correctly, and my use of files from the naturalpoint setup package may not have worked.
2. Software does not recognise or operate hardware
3. Software causes machine to hang when you exit it.
Would really appreciate any help, as I've been dying to get this working since I found it online.
