I have been thinking about the best way to set up a homespun truss system.

Ideally, it would be portable, stable but also pretty light. And set up so that adding additional cameras / moving them would be simple.

(The recommended systems on the site look great..but I'm assuming are above my modest Capital One credit limit! )

I have thought about isomg PVC pipe, or maybe even solid wood with clamps drilled in.

Has anyone come up with a good alternative to tripods? Besides clamps mounted to the wall, that is. If so, post some pics!

(One reason tripods worry me is because I plan to capture on a soft wrestling mat -- and if someone steps too close to the base, the tripod will jiggle.)

This is a great question, and we probably need a reference section for how to mount cameras.

We use Milos Truss, http://www.milos.cz, and get it from a USA supplier, or from B&H. A truss setup is probably $3-5K, but there are cheaper truss systems around, maybe as low as $2k?

I have looked into using IPS pipe or conduit, 1-1/2" dia. You can get all kinds of joining gear for it. Here is one place to look: http://www.nurail.com/s/index.php Conduit or aluminum pipe can be purchased at a local electrical supply store, it is not too bad in price.

Some people also use 80/20: www.8020.net Nice stuff, but somewhat expensive, compared to pipe.

Finally, look at the AutoPoles. They are very easy to setup, if you have a firm ceiling and take up very little space. I love them for fast setups, and they are about $100 each, which is quite reasonable. We sell them, of course. You can get them from B&H too.
