anyone created a good truss system?

I have been thinking about the best way to set up a homespun truss system.
Ideally, it would be portable, stable but also pretty light. And set up so that adding additional cameras / moving them would be simple.
(The recommended systems on the site look great..but I'm assuming are above my modest Capital One credit limit!
)
I have thought about isomg PVC pipe, or maybe even solid wood with clamps drilled in.
Has anyone come up with a good alternative to tripods? Besides clamps mounted to the wall, that is. If so, post some pics!
(One reason tripods worry me is because I plan to capture on a soft wrestling mat -- and if someone steps too close to the base, the tripod will jiggle.)
