hardware vs. software sync

Hi all,
I've found that the "GetSyncQuality" method appears to always indicate a good software sync, regardless if the sync cables are plugged in or not. I'm wondering if the method is reporting incorrectly, or if there's a problem with my setup. Has anyone come across this before, or know of a solution?
