Do not buy Steam version of IL-2 1946 if using Vista

Post by comstar »

For TrackIR to work on Vista you need to run the game as admin. Steam will now allow me to run IL-2 1946 as admin. Says game not currently available when I set the exe to admin mode. Unless Steam games have a special switch to force admin mode this is NFG. Also, Steam version of the game is only 4.07m when the latest version is 4.08.

That's a shame; I'm glad I got mine on a disc.

Also, can you help me? I can't get my TrackIR to work with IL-2, but have heard of people running the latter in admin mode to get it working. How would I run IL-2 in admin mode?

I know this thread's from a long time ago, so apologies for the resurrection, but since it's the top result in google when I searched for this problem I thought I'd post my solution here.

So, to get the steam version of IL2 to work with TrackIR4 in Vista (64) I did the following:
1) Set TrackIR to run as administrator.
2) Set il2fb executable (in the "/steam/steamapps/il 2 sturmovik 1946/" folder to run in windows xp sp2 compatibility mode
3) Set the STEAM executable to be run-as-administrator and windows xp sp2 compatibility mode.

You'll find that when you start steam it'll complain that it doesn't want to be run in compatibility mode, but it does seem to be necessary to get the TrackIR to work in IL2.

I hope this helps someone else who was frustrated with this problem.
